“He could not ascertain the truth because of the tumult” – Acts 21:34
The world will do that to the truth: shout it down and drown it out.
The mob had created such chaos over their animosity to the truth of Paul’s Gospel that the commander of the garrison in Jerusalem could not figure out what was even going on.
When the commander finally does settle the mob down, he makes the false assumption that Paul was an Egyptian leader of four thousand assassins (21:38). This, of course, is not even close to the truth.
Defiance against the Gospel leads to chaos which leads to confusion.
