Convict the World Regarding Sin

And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment” – John 16:8

Where the Holy Spirit is, there will always be deep conviction of sin.

“It is His special office to convict of sin.

He shows the exceeding holiness of God.

He teaches the exceeding corruption and infirmity of our nature.

He strips us of our blind self-righteousness.

He opens our eyes to our awful guilt, folly and danger.

He fills the heart with sorrow, contrition, and abhorrence for sin–as the abominable thing which God hates.

He who knows nothing of all this, and saunters carelessly through life, thoughtless about sin, and indifferent and unconcerned about his soul–is a dead man before God! He has not the Holy Spirit.” – J.C. Ryle (1816-1900)

Only A Cup of Cold Water

And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” – Jesus (Matt. 10:42)

Nothing done for Christ is lost – even the smallest of kind gestures; the giving of a cup of cold water. (J. R. Miller, 1897).

Crowned With Rosebuds

If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” – Jesus (Matt. 16:24)

MUST!

We think of “self-denial” as quitting some pleasure. This falls short of the Greek meaning; man is to deny his whole self, all his natural motives and impulses, anything that comes into conflict with the claims of Christ.

Jesus is our supreme example.

Was He crowned with thorns and we crowned with rosebuds?” – Thomas Brooks (1608–1680)

But By Grace

But by the grace of God I am what I am,” – 1 Cor. 15:10

If some of my congregation knew me better, they would love me less.  Yet my heavenly Father knows me well, favors me much, and loves me wonderfully!” – James Smith, 1857.

He Is Altogether Lovely

His mouth is most sweet, Yes, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, And this is my friend,” – Song of Solomon 5:16

The unrivaled BEAUTY of Jesus.

“Put the beauty of ten thousand worlds of paradises, like the Garden of Eden in one; put all trees, all flowers, all fragrances, all colors, all tastes, all joys, all loveliness, all sweetness in one. O what a lovely and excellent thing would that be! And yet it would be LESS compared to our dearest well-beloved Christ–than one drop of rain compared to the whole seas, rivers, and lakes of ten thousand earths.”– Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661)

The One Who Remains In Love

We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.” – 1 John 4:16

“The spirit of true saints is the spirit of divine love.” – Jonathan Edwards

I Will By No Means Cast Out

The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” – Jesus (John 6:37)

“But I am a great sinner, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I am an old sinner, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I am an hard-hearted sinner, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I am an backsliding sinner, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I have served Satan all my days, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I have sinned against light, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I have sinned against mercy, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

But I have no good thing to bring with me, say you.

‘I will by no means cast out,’ says Christ.

This promise was provided to answer all objections.”

– John Bunyan

Tell That Poor Wretch

“If you meet that poor wretch that thrust the spear into My side, tell him there is another way, a better way; of coming to My heart, if he will repent, and look upon Whom he has pierced and will mourn.

I will cherish him in that very bosom he has wounded; he shall find the blood he shed an ample atonement for the sin of shedding it.

And tell him from Me, he will put Me to more pain and displeasure by refusing this offer of My blood, than when he drew it forth.” – Benjamin Grosvenor (1675-1758) “The Temper of Jesus Christ towards His Enemies, and His Grace to the Chief of Sinners.”

Their Foot Shall Slip In Due Time

Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; Their foot shall slip in due time; For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things to come hasten upon them.” – Deut. 32:35

With the Coronavirus present on the stage, we are reminded of the fragility of Man. A person could be totally healthy one day but gone the next all because of one little virus.

Jonathon Edwards used this verse in his masterpiece sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”

Our foot shall slip in due time. Where will you end up when you fall?
