“All our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” – Isa. 64:6
All our good works, ALL of them, are contaminated. They do not and can not save us.
Only Jesus saves.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we don’t do good works: Good works don’t save people, but saved people do good works.
Martin Luther said God doesn’t need our good works, but our neighbor does.
“He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.“ – Isa. 40:11
Note the loving tenderness of our Lord Jesus.
Note the action verbs: He will feed, gather, carry, and lead.
Note how God is especially gentle leading those with children!
Our Savior is lovingly tender and active.
“Teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psa. 90:12
To believe your days are not numbered by holy God would be to gain a heart of foolishness.
Want a heart of wisdom? Live with the heavenly perspective that your days are numbered by holy God.
Praise God for every day He grants you.
It is due to His wondrous grace that you have one more.
“LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.” – Psa. 39:4
We are frail, God is not.
We are transient, God is not.
Put your faith in Him.
“For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.” – 1 Thes. 1:5
In much assurance: abundant confidence, deep conviction, lit. “fully come to bear.”
The Gospel of Jesus Christ = Word + power + Holy Spirit + full assurance.
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Tim. 3:16-17
ALL Scripture is profitable; valuable, useful.
NO Scripture is unprofitable; valueless, useless.
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” – Rom. 8:28
“And we know.”
Here is faith in action: Believers know and trust in God’s overruling, comprehensive, and good providence over all of His creation.
Note that God’s provision of working everything for the good is offered only to those who love God.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is set on You, because he trusts in you.” – Isa. 26:3
God supplies perfect peace for all who trust in Him.
If one rejects God, they cannot expect this comforting provision.
“There is no peace for the wicked.” – Isa. 48:22
“I will love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies. – Psa. 18:1-3
God, the Sovereign Savior!
“Their hearts were devoted to their idols!” Ezekiel 20:16
God will not tolerate any rivals.
