Insights from Proverbs 11 for the 11th:
Proverbs 11 has some what I would call Proverbs Greatest Hits. Such as:
“Where there is no counsel, the people fall;
But in the multitude of counselors there is safety (v. 14).”
Whenever I have a tough decision, my first stop is with Jesus, but my next stop is with wise counsel. I hope you have a small group of trusted advisors you can turn to for honest counsel. No man is an island and I trust you know that you don’t know it all.
“As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout,
So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion (v. 22).”
I just love this imagery. Wow, I mean – how ridiculous?
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
And he who wins souls is wise (v. 30).”
Here again we have the metaphor of righteousness as a thriving tree, but with a little change; it is the fruit which is a tree. Interesting. A whole forest can grow from one tree. I heard it said that man can count the number of apples on a tree, but God counts the number of trees in an apple.
It would be easy to read this and think Solomon is only talking to pastors or leaders. However, we are all called to win souls.
Are you a disciple-making disciple? How many trees are in your apple?
